From this first verse an image comes to mind of a relationship coming to an end or not running as smoothly as it should be. It seems to becoming from the view point of a male talking about his girlfriend.

The chorus makes me think he is slowly giving up and in a way is 'in too deep' and should get out of this relationship while he can before its to late hence the 'instead of going under' lyric.

This verse seems to me like he has finally realised that he is in a dead end and really isn't in a fun relationship.
